2026 World Cup Groups Explained

Everything you need to know about the 2026 World Cup group stage — how the 12 groups work, which teams are in each group, and how to predict the results.

The 2026 World Cup group stage is unlike anything we've seen before. With 48 teams spread across 12 groups, the opening phase of the tournament is packed with matches, storylines, and prediction opportunities.

How Groups Work

Each group contains four teams. Every team plays each other team in their group once, earning:

  • 3 points for a win
  • 1 point for a draw
  • 0 points for a loss

The top two teams in each group advance to the Round of 32. The eight best third-place finishers also qualify, so even finishing third doesn't necessarily end your tournament.

The 12 Groups

The 2026 World Cup features groups A through L — each containing four teams from different confederations where possible. This global mix ensures a diverse range of styles, tactics, and footballing cultures in every group.

What to Look For

When predicting group stage results, consider:

  1. Recent form — How have teams performed in qualifiers and friendlies?
  2. Head-to-head records — Some matchups have long histories that can influence outcomes.
  3. Squad depth — With three group matches in quick succession, squad depth matters more than ever.
  4. Tactical style — Certain styles match up better or worse against specific opponents.
